I've been meaning to write a post on what I, at least, perceive to be a dangerous sense of triumphalism in the liberal blogosphere. There's a bit too much talk of the GOP becoming just a regional party - and only appealing to a small group of retrograde douchebags in that region itself. I was all set to explain, with examples, how all the talk of the GOP's complete self-destruction was uncomfortably reminiscent of the talk of the Democrats as a "permanent minority" during the early Bush years.
I still feel that way, somewhat. It's just that whenever I'm all set to self-righteously pontificate on the liberal blogosphere's excesses, some prominent member of the Republican party decides to do something like this (via):
“Well his father was Kenyan and they said he was born in Hawaii, but I haven’t seen any birth certificate,” Shelby said. “You have to be born in America to be president.”
If the GOP doesn't become a pathetic husk of its former self, consisting entirely of old, racist white men and those unfortunate enough to personally depend upon them, it won't be for lack of trying.
