MR Bill

Marry this "neighbors acting suspiciously" with Michelle Bachman's vision of investigating and punishing "unAmerican" beliefs and attitudes, and throw in some nativist paranoia, and you've got a recipe for a police state....

MR Bill,

Well, at least one Congressional rep is calling for the revival of HUAC -- Steve King, Republican of Iowa. I'm sure he can find many other supporters in the country.

If you see something, say something...

Well clearly there's always plenty to see at Walmart.

But how would one distinguish a person who's a bona fide threat to others from one who simply enjoys shopping while wearing irridescent lime-green high-heeled platform sandals with combat fatigues and a fuchsia fishnet tank-top overlaid with a half-dozen ammunition belts?

I await Secretary Napolitano's thoughts on this.

Jack Stinglash

"It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself--anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face...; was itself a punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime..."

David Gilmore

Our security-obsessed nation is beginning to look a lot like East Germany before the wall came down - encouraging people to spy on each other was one of the main goals of the Stasi.

Perhaps Walmart can start selling the Belly Cam? See my tour of the Stasi Museum in Leipzig on my blog.

Sir Charles

What if you feel threatened by large people wearing aquamarine velour track suits?

I'm a bit worried about watch lists... But I do think they should record these things, so that it's available when they need to make a past case.

Unfortunately, it seems more like a system to show how 'poorly' crime can be predicted.
