Number of Senators That Have Endorsed Marriage Equality | Have | Haven't |
Democrats | 48 | 7 |
Republicans | 2 | 43 |
Just a wee bit of a difference there. (Note: I've updated the chart to take into account that Sen. Carper of Delaware has now endorsed marriage equality. And now a Republican, Sen. Mark Kirk. Hey, I'm willing to keep updating this chart as the day goes on. Keep it coming, ladies and gentlemen of the Senate. How about you, Sen. Heitkamp? By the time you're up for re-election in 2018, this won't be controversial even in North Dakota, you know.)
What's on your minds? Open thread.
Update: for some reason, it took your favorite math geek a few hours to realize that the numbers in the left-hand column add up to 50. That means that, with VP Biden's help, there's presumably a Senate majority for repealing DOMA. So why not force a vote on it?
Sure, the actual vote would be a cloture vote on a motion to proceed, which would fail, but it would still get everyone's votes on record. And it would signal that the Dems aren't waiting on the Supreme Court, they're trying to move the ball forward on their own - and the GOP, excepting Kirk and Portman, is still standing in the way. Losing well is an important part of politics, and this is a great opportunity to lose well.
Update 4/5/13: Thanks to Democratic Sens. Bill Nelson (FL), Heidi Heitkamp (ND), and Joe Donnelly (IN), the table is now updated below:
Number of Senators That Have Endorsed Marriage Equality | Have | Haven't |
Democrats | 51 | 4 |
Republicans | 2 | 43 |
