"The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar" - Elkie Brooks
Great cover of a magnificent Dylan song -- one that has the peculiar Dylan gift of being both intensely personal and containing multitudes all at once:
Try to be pure at heart, they arrest you for robbery,
Mistake your shyness for aloofness, your silence for snobbery,
Got the message this morning, the one that was sent to me
About the madness of becomin' what one was never meant to be.
West of the Jordan, east of the Rock of Gibraltar,
I see the turning of the page,
Curtain risin' on a new age,
See the groom still waitin' at the altar.
- If I were Obama I would be sorely tempted to try to bring about the fall of the Netanyahu government. Let's be clear -- Netanyahu is not a friend of the United States; anyone who thinks that he is is either delusional or more loyal to Israel than they are to the United States. He is a dangerous and destabilising force from an American perspective. Again, were I President Obama, the next chance I got in the U.N to vote against Israel on something, I'd do it and make clear that it is just the beginning. The U.S. has no vital interest in allowing the Israelis to occupy the West Bank indefinitely -- indeed, just the opposite. To continue to allow our tax dollars to support the government of this arrogant putz should be anthema to anyone who is interested in the best interests of the American people.
- Republican cannot change their position on gay marriage because they have gotten way too far out there on that limb. There's just no room for retreat at this point. They've done the same thing to themselves on immigration reform. And at some point -- and I think relatively soon -- there will be a price to pay.
- My wife always asks me why I get so agitated about newspaper columnist blatherings and the Sunday bobbleheads. This is why. As irrelevant as they may seem to most Americans, the mainstream pundits continue to help set the regressive political agenda that dominates much of American politics. And that's why deficits somehow matter more than jobs.
Time to go have pizza and beer.
