Then, the phone rings. It's a great singer and a dear, dear friend. It's a call I have to take even knowing as I reach for the phone that what ever I'm asked I will say "yes."
Me: Are you calling to see if I'm going to send you truffles?
Her: I never say no to truffles but this isn't about that.
Me: Ok, what's it about?
Her: We're on a mission from God, I'm putting the band together, the Penguin needs money for the kids. You gotta play.
Me: Where?
Her: Tucson.
Me: When?
Her: Friday. Say you'll come.
Me: You know what a sucker I am for that line.
Her: So, that's a yes?
Me: It's a hell yes, did you ever doubt me?
Her: They're cutting school funding all over the state, especially music programs, I have to do something.
Me: Of course you do. I'm really glad to help. It will push the truffles back until next week, but they are already a week late so who cares?
Her: You'll be staying here with the folks so don't be foolish and book a hotel.
Me: Will there be tamales?
Her: Always.
Me: See you tomorrow my dear.
