"Hangover Days" - Jason Collett and Feist
These are the hangover days
of frosted glass and metallic gleam
all the new non-places
erase my memory

I am sorry I didn't make it to netroots this year, but family and professional obligations took precedence. Packed my kid off to a trip to Ecuador on Friday and attended officer nominations for one of my local union clients yesterday. We have though had Vegas-like heat to enjoy here, coupled with ungodly humidity. It cracked 101 here yesterday in what appears likely to be a summer for the record books (after a winter for the record books).
I saw "Inception" last night and would have a hard time describing how much I hated it -- I can't remember the last time I saw a movie this hyped that bored the shit out of me more or left me feeling more indifferent towards its characters. At some level the movie demands your concentration except that you realize there will be no payoff, because you truly couldn't give a fuck about anyone in the film. Even Ellen Page, which is saying something. I thought I must be out of my mind because as I recall when it was released the internet debate seemed to be: Inception - great movie or greatest movie. I laughed when I saw this piece in the New York Times today talking about the critical reaction to the movie and how the initial hype has faced a bit of a backlash. I felt much better having read this takedown of it by David Edelstein at New York Magazine. The only point on which I will disagree is on Leonardo DiCaprio whom he characterizes as "excellent." When I think of DiCaprio I am always reminded of Dorothy Parker's immortal put down of a performance by Katherine Hepburn - running the gamut of emotions from A to B. Other than "Catch me if you Can" I would be hard pressed to remember a compelling performance from him.
Next time I'll follow my instincts and go with Angelina Jolie.
What's going on with you?
