To continue with our sporty theme, when a friend of mine told me that a match at Wimbledon was tied 59-59 in the fifth set yesterday, I thought that he had lost his mind.
But it's true - absolutely amazing. John Isner of the U.S. and Nicholas Mahut of France have now been involved in the longest match in history (and illustrating in the process why the tie-break was invented). Isner, by the way, is 6'9" and weighs 245 pounds. I am guessing he's a bit tired at this point.
The fifth set alone has lasted 7 hours and 6 minutes. (I should note that last time I played tennis for two hours -- doubles at that, against two opponents who were Medicare eligible -- I ended up in the hospital.)
Update: Isner won 70-68! In other words, they played another twenty games today. I've got to think his next round opponent will have a bit of a leg up on him.
And in even more earth-shattering sports news, the defending champion Italians are out of the World Cup, after losing to Slovakia 3-2, joining the last Cup's other finalists, France, in being eliminated in the opening round. Amazing.
