Yes, this will expose me as the "purported progressive blogger" that I am and give Glenn Greenwald and his acolytes the vapors, but I really am having a hard time giving a shit about the alleged orders to capture or kill Anwar al-Awalki, the radical Islamic cleric and American citizen, currently hiding in a part of Yemen not under the control of its government. Awalki, who had ties to Fort Hood shooter, Nidal Malik Hasan, as well as to failed Christmas crotch bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, (and possible ties with the would-be Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad, as well as three of the 9/11 hijackers) has recently appeared in a lengthy interview (with al Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula) in which he openly advocates, encourages and justifies violent attacks on American citizens.
It seems to me that when someone has sequestered himself abroad outside of the reach of normal law enforcement, is actively engaged in promoting acts of terrorism against the United States, where his associates have committed such acts on U.S. soil and killed Americans in the process, and has made common cause with an organization, al Qaeda, with whom the U.S. is in a de facto war, a military rather than a law enforcement approach is justifiable.
What say you?
