I am up to my eyeballs work-wise, but just had to comment on the Israeli attack on the Turkish ship trying to bring supplies to the beleaguered Gazans. Sweet Jesus, when is the U.S. going to understand that the reflexive embrace of whatever Israel does -- particularly under the leadership of a one-dimensional bully -- is not in our interests?
Now we have the possibility of our NATO ally Turkey sending more relief ships under naval escort to Gaza. How does that end well for anyone?
As both Glenn Greenwald and Ian have pointed out (and yes, I am in total agreement with them on this), this kind of attack in international waters on citizens would be considered an absolute outrage by Americans if committed by any other country. Even more disturbingly, we now have citizens of a NATO country being attacked on the high seas in a way that could properly trigger the right of Turkey to seek assistance from other NATO members in its collective defense against an act of war.
The course that Israel is charting is not in anyone best interests, including its own. It would be a major mistake for the Obama Administration to not condemn this action.
