Kevin Drum says of climate deniers:
At first glance, there certainly appears to be something circular going on here: nobody knows if the climate change deniers' arguments are any good, because the scientific establishment is shutting them out, and won't let them make the argument.
A few years ago, we were hearing the same line from the intelligent design theorists, and I get to say the same thing now that I said then:
Go create your own scientific journals. Publish them online. Peer review each other's stuff. This isn't 1979 anymore. The gatekeepers are still there, but they can't stop you from publishing anymore; they can only stop you from publishing in journals they control.
If you aren't doing this, then quit whining about being excluded, and create your own community that won't exclude you. If you aren't doing this and you keep on whining, then the rest of us can assume that you've got nothin'. (OK, the rest of us are already assuming that, but this gives us a better argument to make to anyone still on the fence.)
And if you do choose to go this route, just remember that people can still look at your journal and tell whether it's publishing science, or publishing crap. But if you're publishing crap, it'll at least mean that nobody has to check up on every last piece of denialist nonsense anymore: the quality of the journal as a whole can be evaluated, and if it's crap, then there's no reason anyone has to look through the entire cesspool to see if one gold nugget slipped in somehow.
If by some miracle you're doing science, it'll take a little while for the rest of the world to realize it. But eventually it will, so don't give up hope. But the main thing is, if you're really doing science, you want to do science and publish it. So get crackin'. And if you're just a bunch of coal industry shills who are trying to generate quick publicity, with no science behind your words, that'll become apparent even faster.
