Saturday Night Song of Obsession

"Shadowplay" - Joy Division

To the center of the city where all roads meet, waiting for you,
To the depths of the ocean where all hopes sank, searching for you,
I was moving through the silence without motion, waiting for you . . .

How were Joy Division received back then? They're not quite so similar to Interpol (or rather, vice versa) as I thought, but they still seem like a band from another time.

Like a lot of the great bands of the era they had critical and cult followings, but were not really known in the mainstream (at least in the U.S.). I think that like The Jam, Joy Division was much bigger in the U.K., in part because they never toured here. Ian Curtis's suicide definitely added to their legend and they inspired a huge quantity of bands in later years. In that respect they remind me of the Velvet Underground, which sold very few records, but influenced a stunning number of performers long after their demise.
