"Fairytale of New York" - The Pogues
I was pissed to see that Thers had already posted this at Eschaton earlier -- I swear I had been planning on it for Christmas Eve for days. Really one of my favorite songs of all time, for any season. How could you resist a song that begins "It was Christmas Eve in the drunk tank . . ."
Not to mention turning both the duet and the Christmas song on their heads with the lovely melody leading into one of the great back and forths between Shane McGowan and Kirsty MacColl ( a real talent who was killed in a tragic accident just over eight years ago):
You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last
The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day
Ah yes, what speaks better to the spirit of Christmas than this.
Well, 'tis after midnight and it is time to cajole the sleeping wife off the couch and upstairs. It's a violation of all Christmas etiquette to sleep on the couch on Christmas Eve. It's the drunk tank or bed.
Until the morning my pretties.
