The Uighur Problem

The US government was recently ordered to release 17 Uighur men from Guantanamo Bay.  The government dropped its case against them earlier this year, but were holding them indefinitely - as is the norm at Gitmo - because they didn't want to release them into the US and, oddly enough, feared for their safety if they were returned to Xinjiang province in China.  During their imprisonment, the White House allowed Chinese officials to interrogate them, even using "harsh interrogation techniques" to soften the prisoners up before the Chinese officials had access to them.

China, for its part, has promised not to torture the men if they are returned to Xinjiang.  In this instance we can certainly believe the Chinese government.  They won't torture them; instead, these men will most likely be dragged into the center of Urumqi and executed pour encourager les autres.
