Can you fucking imagine if Barack Obama said he doesn't know how many houses he owns or if Michelle Obama ever said that she needed to buy a second multi-million dollar beach condo because the kids were crowding up the first one?   

Seriously, I represent pension funds that have smaller real estate portfolios than St. John of the Tiger Cage.  Not to mention smaller staffs.  (McCain's budget for household staff increased from $184,000 in 2006 to $273,000 in 2007 -- why am I guessing that this wasn't due to really big raises?)

The Obama campaign needs to hammer this thing home over and over and over.  Yes, exactly so.  You can already hear these fuckers squealing like pigs.  [I love the response by one -- "Americans aspire to be rich.  They don't want to eat arugula and hang out with celebrities."  Yes, Americans are really celebrity averse; a message driven home to me every time I stand in the supermarket check out line (when I give my staff the day off).]

Still, at least he doesn't get $400 hair cuts.

Ah, but Paul Kane of the WaPo had this observation in todays Post Politics Discussion:"Every time something happens of this level to Obama (Rev. Wright, "bitter") the response from Dems is that in really tough times like this the American voters are not going to be swayed by these little things and the attacks and the negativity that follows, the voters will focus on the really big issues. That's what comes from Democrats. So, does the same not apply to something like this?

At this point in his national political career McCain is not going to be transformed into a super rich elitist. He's just not, the voters won't buy it. It has the potential to reinforce questions about his age, I guess."

I too think this story will have legs. I know the pundit classes like to bewail "class warfare" but I think that The People are not really adverse to it. I think a lot of people, even people who vote republican, hate rich people, hate CEOs. And they definitely hate politicians, because everybody hates politicians. (Digression: I think the reason that the whole Obamessiah meme took hold is not so much that he really came of as messianic or something, it's just that a lot of people's response to him was "Wow, a politician I can trust and like as a person," and other more cynical types were like, "No! You fools! That's just what he wants you to think! He's really just better at this, can't you see that Argh!") Seriously, give people a reason to despise John McCain for being "better" than them and they will jump on that like piranhas on a baby. Just like they jumped on the "celebrity" meme with Obama.

Yeah, it's too bad that Obama's positive message approach has gotten thrown by the wayside, but fuck it. The media are sucking up to McCain (except for Joe Klein, who is kind of awesome now, and that's weird), and Obama is operating at a clear disadvantage in getting his message across. Positive change is good and all, but I really don't want to go to war with Russia, so fuck it, go after his wife, for all I care. Just don't lose.
