This has to be some sort of Platonic ideal parable of the story of overly enthusiastic urban environmentalists and permitting gone mad. Keep it in the back of your head if you ever end up on a City Council.

How about having made this building a historic landmark so it can't be demolished?

P.S. But Brutalism has long been all the rage, no matter that most people hate it (gee -- wonder why?). But then that's because we're backwards-thinking, reactionary know-nothings who prattle on about things like "beauty" (perish the thought) and "harmony" and "grace" and stupid shit like that, instead of embracing the uber-avant-garde aesthetics of this school of architecture that's so obviously over our heads.
Never mind the irony of the name -- don't even go there. (And yes, bitchez, I do know the derivation of the term and I know it wasn't intended to have anything to do with the adjective "brutal," but sometimes the world has a way of coming up with its own humor and its own justice, despite man's best efforts to thwart it.)

You're archaic love of beauty is so yesterday.
I actually didn't know that brutalism and brutal had nothing to do with one another. It made so much sense intuitively.

That's because, as a man, you're a brute!

Okay, either the pun-lovers or the fem-haters are really going to come out of the woodwork now.

Here's another one, Sir C, that will make your skin crawl -- Sainte Marie de la Tourette, ostensibly a priory, in France:
