This juvenile piece by Andrew Klavan in today's Wall Street Journal comparing George W. Bush to Batman shows once again the dangers of mixing art, even the low art of summer movies, with the tiny minds of right wingers. No, really, you must force yourself to read it.
Klavan gets all profound and shit, summing his theme up in what might be characterized as the Nick Lowe school of morality: "true [moral] complexity arises . . .when we reach the place where we must be intolerant in order to defend tolerance, or unkind in order to defend kindness, or hateful in order to defend what we love." Or when you have to destroy the village in order to save it. As they say, "baby, you've got to be cruel to be kind."
Here's a nice takedown of this nonsense.
Sir Charles:
You forgot to mention the motto Bono and the boys used on their "Live in Boston"(thought it might have been "Live in Chicago") DVD. "Don't become a monster in order to destroy a monster."
