So You Want To Win Ohio
I'm getting on a plane to Singapore tonight, and my first days in town may be a little hectic, so somebody else will have to handle the nonstop Edwards-promotion duties for me. But before I leave, I want to show you the latest bit of awesome from SurveyUSA's VP polling.
By now, SurveyUSA has conducted two big Ohio polls with VP candidates. They've tested 7 Republican VP prospects and 8 Democrats (including Ohio governor Ted Strickland.) The only VP who added to Obama's totals was John Edwards, who added between 3 and 9 points depending on who was attached to McCain. Even Strickland, who won the governorship 60-39 in 2006, didn't do that for Obama.
I wouldn't make too much of the fact that Edwards massively outperforms people whom nobody in the state has heard of -- that's to be expected. But in Ohio, as in Pennsylvania, John Edwards does more for Barack Obama than the well-known and popular home-state governor can.
Neil,
Have a safe trip and enjoy Singapore. I too would love to see Edwards on the ticket, as I think would many here. I don't see anyone else out there who brings as many plusses to the ticket without any significant downsides.

I think at this point I almost want Edwards on the ticket just for Neil's sake. It would just make him so happy!

Until he is crushingly disappointed. :-)

My latest pet theory is that Obama will continue to tack to the right, infuriating progressives, for several more weeks. And then, in a moment of theatrical brilliance, he'll announce Edwards as his running mate, causing the Netroots to swoon. Somewhere Petey and Neil will smile for the first time in months. Shortly after that, Obama and Edwards will tack to the right, crushing all of our souls.

Although I've only had the pleasure of meeting him once, I feel confident that Neil smiles all of the time. Petey, on the other hand, (based on his comments at Yglesias's site) I am guessing is not a big smiler.
