California Supreme Court Legalizes Gay Marriage

I don't have many original things to say about this, so I'll express my feelings by animated gif:

Yeah

10/10 for the pic

November 3rd, 2004 was the definitive low point for me in politics... what with the second Bush term and 11 states amending bigotry into their state Constitutions. I honestly wondered whether this was a country I could live in, despite the fact that I had often mocked the typical "I'm moving to Canada!" liberal response to adversity. People who could vote for such things were not people I could feel a connection to.

It's 4 years later and I gotta say it was a good day.

However... it bothers me that some liberal commentators are more worried about electoral fallout than they are about equal rights. I'm pretty much tired of the whole idea that I have to sacrifice my ideals and subsume my morals to get a Dem into power. I'm pretty much all "Bring it!" and let's win on the merits these days. I live in Boston and haven't been turned into a pillar of salt because they're are some married queers in my neighborhood, and I'm feeling that we are on the cusp of a lot of Americans realizing the same thing. When you've got perpetual war and a terrible economy, I don't think people are going to vote on the marriage rights of others... so I don't think this is something we should be trying so hard to pretend didn't happen.

This is wonderful news. I hope the law in Florida will one day reflect this modern, logical thinking, as the husband's niece and her partner are currently "married but not really married"--something they'd love to rectify--and numerous friends of ours in similar limbo would all finally be able to enjoy the same rights as straight folks. And we can all get on with living our imperfect (but ever-perfectible, we hope, we hope) lives.

Can't say I'm thrilled with some of the glibertarian spin--"See, this is great, because it's exactly what we meant and what we wanted when we said that states ought to have the right to legislate marriage as they please and not have other states' definitions of marriage forced upon them..."

That said, though, I am picturing dominoes right now. Lavender dominoes!

Where the hell is that gif from?

You know, last night I went to see some bands play with my friend (who is a lesbian). The first thing I said to her was whether she heard about the decision in CA. She said yes, and then immediately expressed doubt that it would stand and we launched into a discussion of the potential future ramifications (she seemed somewhat more pessimistic than I was). Then I read JW Hammer's and litbrit's comments about the "spin" and looked back and realized that the very people that should be thrilled about this, such as my friend, are already in that frame of mind.

Depressing...

but I'll still cling to my dream of one day catching a groom's garter (jockstrap?)...

Corvus, I have no idea whatsoever where the gif is from. If anybody finds out, let me know.
