Sir Charles

Good for Danica. The pressure on her must have been enormous.

(Would it be wrong to note that she is also really lovely?)

Of course it's not wrong! Sheesh, she's a beautiful woman and you'd have to be without a pulse, or at least seriously myopic, not to notice that.

What a tough competitor Danica is, though. I can't even imagine the butterflies in the stomach thing--you feel that when you climb into the car anyway, and it doesn't subside until the wheels start rolling, and even then not completely. But driving competitively, at speed, for 200 laps, with the eyes of the world on your car and the hopes of racing fans and aspiring female drivers everywhere piled on your shoulders...wow.

I don't follow racing at all - no Indy, no NASCAR, no nothin'. But of course I'd heard the name, and had tripped across a mention that some of her rivals wanted something done about her weight advantage, as if this was horseracing. So I figured she must be doing pretty well, for anyone to even raise the point.

Kudos to her for winning. And damn, what a knockout she is!

It's neat how she's managed to integrate the fact that she's a very sexy woman into her public persona (I was a little worried when I saw all those racy GoDaddy ads) without letting it define her or interfere with anything she's doing.

I guess it's much easier to do that when you're awesome at something entirely merit-based that's unrelated to looking hot. But even so, I'm impressed that we've come far enough that it all works out.

Neil--exactly. Once your helmet is on and you're behind the wheel, it matters not if you're man or woman, blonde or brunette. Whether or not you wind up atop the podium is dependent on talent, courage, intelligent fuel-managing, and of course, a certain amount of mechanical good fortune (not breaking down or having an "incident" on track.)

And as for Danica's weight advantage, I'd say it's more than offset by her male opponents' muscle advantage--even straightforward turns at speed require amazing strength; defensive maneuvering or rescuing yourself from a spin without hitting the wall, all the more. She's a brilliant athlete, and if her good looks help her garner lucrative sponsorships, well, I don't recall too many people complaining when male athletes have done likewise!

However some motorsports fans want minimize Danica Patrick's initial Indy Car victory, just remember all great drivers had to get their first triumph before rising to superstar status. Yes, it remains to be seen if Ms. Patrick will rise to match the driving feats of of A.J., the Unsers, Ricks Mears, etc., but the way she drove through the "glass wall" in Japan, I wouldn't put it past her.

i still hate all people who participate and watch auto racing that is all *goes back to hibernate for another few months*

Glenn, Danica drives in Indycar, not NASCAR. And as for the husband and me, we drive vintage race cars.

I hope you're just referring to NASCAR, a format Robert derisively refers to as "roundy-roundy pile-up racing".

Because if you hate me without having even met me, well...there's nothing I can say in response to that.
