Today, the Arizona Senator tried to butt his way into the headlines by attacking Obama for being inexperienced, an attack that's worked like a charm for Hillary Clinton. Among other things, McCain listed a series of military conflicts that have lead to long-lasting foreign bases, in Germany, Japan, Korea, and Kuwait. Class, can anyone name the military conflict not on this list? Anyone? Bueller?
What's that you say, Vietnam? Why, yes! A gold star for you!
In Iraq, there is no Communist Aggressor that the U.S. must protect against, as in Korea, Japan, and Germany; no neighboring power-hungry dictator that Iraq, as in Kuwait. While the rest of the world will need to maintain diplomatic and commercial ties to Iraq to help build it's civic institutions, there's not much that our modestly-sized military presence can accomplish, unless we're just going to raze Sadr City, Basra, and the Diyala province.
For laughs, I started chatting about Al-Sadr's cease fire re-declaration today while waiting for a game of Halo 3(MLG playlist) to kick off. Nobody knew what the fuck I was talking about.

I live in Diyala Province, the situation is significantly better than just a few weeks ago. This place is not a Sadr City. It's not totally peaceful here but I can think of many other places I'd rather not be.
