Hastert won the district 60-40 last year, even with the taint of the Mark Foley scandal on him. That was the tightest the district had ever been since 1986. Hastert was regularly racking up percentages in the upper 60s and 70s.
Obama was doing commercials for him. In a 52%-48% election, it could have made the difference. Obviously, that is not the only thing going on here. But Obama's popularity in "red" suburban IL was probably helpful. Don't be fooled by the fact this was IL - parts of the Chicago suburbs are traditionally pretty conservative. But they seem to like Obama there anyway.
Litbrit, thanks for the link to the LOL Cats site. I could never figure out where those cat pictures and sayings were coming from across the blogosphere.
Joe, my pleasure. I appreciate good grammar and spelling as much as anyone--and probably more than most--but I also understand why our feline friends wield considerably weaker language skills than we. I mean, when one's genus and species is defined by a consuming need to sleep for twenty out of twenty-four hours, and one isn't blessed with the opposing thumbs required to turn the pages of the OED or the Chicago Manual of Style, it would naturally follow that one would spell phonetically and bugger up one's syntax on a nearly continual basis.
weboy. I didn't get it for like a year. My girlfriend kept showing me the pictures and I didn't get what the big deal was. And now they're hilarious. I'm not sure when I'll stop finding them funny again.
One of my all-time favorite LOL's was one that TRex did of Mitt Romney after the infamous "religion of my fathers/freedom of religion" blathering. The caption: I CAN HAZ KENNEDY ASSOCIATIONS?
Gotta spread this great remark from commenter Phil at Yglesias':
Apparently sick of convincing superdelegates, Obama has hit upon the innovative strategy of creating new superdelegates.

(I substituted "creating" for Phil's "inventing," but either way it's worth spreading that around.)

Obama has coat tails because he can help a Dem win a seat in Illinois? Be still my heart. :)
(It's great we won Hastert's seat. Because of Obama? Not seeing it. Or certainly not seeing it as the big story here.)

Usually the speaker is from a safe district.

So yeah, this was solid GOP territory.

Right, a couple years ago Obama wasn't the Illinois guy, he was a politician from the south side. He's not a long-time Illinois institution.

Hillary has coattails too... for Republicans.

Where's the picture of the winner? Since Obama campaigned for Foster, it would be good to see the picture of them togethre.

I couldn't find a picture of the two of them together. So I went for one with Obama wearing a coat.

I Luv Me Sum Catz, but I think the list we can expect of them is grammar and spelling. :)
Can I just add that I find the LOLCAT thing weird? I mean really weird. It's cute, I guess... but I really don't get the appeal.
