We desperately need one genuinely liberal/progressive (or whatever adjective of your choosing) traditional media outlet in this country. Newspaper, cable channel, whatever.

Nothing wrong with blogs, but I'd be surprised if 20% of Americans read blogs.

Just as no mainstream media outlet has noticed that the Bush Administration thoroughly discredited itself years ago, no mainstream media outlet is willing to see McCain as anything other than a straight-talking GOP maverick, no matter how high the evidence piles up.

Chris Matthews is willing to drag some state senator from Texas over the coals over his inability to answer a question that Matthews should have been doing his own research and reporting on, but let's see him throw hardball questions at McCain about matters that would call his integrity into question.

And all the rest of them are the same. For whatever reasons, they regard the Republicans as the political equivalent of the null hypothesis, deserving of being in power until proven with 95% confidence to be undeserving - but someone else has to do the proving, and the Dems are the only 'someone else' with standing to make the case: unwashed bloggers in their bathrobes need not apply.

And the Dems are the alternative hypothesis, to be regarded as not having proved their ability to wield power capably, until they've demonstrated with 95% certainty that they can. Except the only way to prove that is to be in power, and the media do their best to keep them out by pointing out that there's no evidence to suggest they're capable.

This is also why, in the absence of at least one liberal/progressive traditional media voice, I believe we need a liberal/progressive party (to compete for 'safe' Congressional seats) other than the Democrats: we are still, to a large extent, shut out of the discussion. An actual party gives us direct access to the public in a way that neither blogging nor attempting to work through the Democratic Party does.
